\nPublish something free. A human arrives.
\nThey see an ad, or buy, or leave an email address you can use later.<\/p>\n
Machines do not see ads.
\nThey do not leave emails.
\nThey do not come back out of loyalty.<\/p>\n
Cloudflare’s CFO said it out loud on last week’s earnings call. Non-human traffic could reach 1,000 times human traffic within five years. His phrase: humans will be a rounding error.<\/p>\n
In 2002 I was a DBA at 1-800-FLOWERS.com, a giant of the dot com era.<\/p>\n
Peak season meant a war room. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, rebuilding the forecast every ten minutes, thousands of orders a minute.<\/p>\n
Every signal we watched was a person. Hesitating. Comparing. Deciding.<\/p>\n
That is what the entire internet was built to read.<\/p>\n
Cloudflare’s CEO gave the sharpest example.
\nA person shopping for a camera checks five sites. An agent checks five thousand.<\/p>\n
So 4,999 businesses pay bandwidth, servers and security for a visitor who was never going to buy.<\/p>\n
Bots crossed half of all requests in May 2026. Cloudflare had forecast 2027.<\/p>\n
Attention is not the product anymore. Access is.<\/p>\n
Every ad dollar Google and Meta make depends on a human seeing something. Traffic is about to grow a thousand times with nobody watching.<\/p>\n
Does that end the ad model, or do they simply start selling to the agents instead?<\/p>\n
