Somewhere in our neighbourhood tonight, a 17 year old is learning to solve a problem faster. Something happened on September 8 that his syllabus does not cover.
\nNot his. Not any student’s.<\/p>\n
The textbook chose the problem.
\nThe teacher explained it.
\nThe exam will reward him for answering it.<\/p>\n
His parents are investing their savings.
\nHe is investing his teenage years.<\/p>\n
For generations, solving difficult mathematics has been the mark of exceptional intelligence.<\/p>\n
On September 8, OpenAI announced a proposed solution to the Navier-Stokes problem. Unresolved for roughly 90 years.<\/p>\n
About 88 hours to produce it.
\nAnother 17 for formal verification.<\/p>\n
The claim deserves scrutiny. And those human ambitions are still worth pursuing.<\/p>\n
It reminded me of a lesson business taught me the hard way.<\/p>\n
You can get every answer right and still build the wrong business.<\/p>\n
Hire excellent people.
\nBuild a great product.
\nDeliver on time.<\/p>\n
Then discover nobody needs it enough to pay.<\/p>\n
The mistake happened before the work began.<\/p>\n
Now think of that boy again.<\/p>\n
Everyone asks him about his marks.<\/p>\n
Has anyone asked what he would like to fix?<\/p>\n
Next time a child shows you an answer, ask this.<\/p>\n
“If you could pick any problem, which one would you pick?”<\/p>\n
Fixing a problem is becoming easy.<\/p>\n
Finding the problem worth fixing is the new moat.<\/p>\n
That is what we need to teach the next generation.<\/p>\n
