By the age of four, my daughter knew one of my senior team members in India by name.<\/p>\n

They had never met.<\/p>\n

That is how often she heard me on the phone.<\/p>\n

This photograph was taken earlier, in 2004, on Long Island, New York. Aishani was still a baby.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s her on my lap. A phone wedged against my shoulder. A computer behind us.<\/p>\n

By day, I was a database administrator at 1-800-FLOWERS. By night, I ran a ecommerce website called DesiPhone.com from our spare room.<\/p>\n

The day job paid the rent. The night job was the dream. She was born in the middle of both.<\/p>\n

A small team in India handled customer support for the website. Night in New York was morning in India. After one workday ended, another began.<\/p>\n

A customer hadn\u2019t received a calling card PIN. My team needed help. There was another call to take.<\/p>\n

And sometimes, as you can see, I took it with my daughter on my lap.<\/p>\n

Twenty-two years later, @Aishani works for mutlinational insurance company in Boston. I asked her what she remembers about those years.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were always busy,\u201d she said. \u201cYou talked to them in the car, in the living room, at the dinner table. Your business sneaked into our house every day and every weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

That stayed with me.<\/p>\n

When I tell the story of those years, I talk about keeping my job, serving customers and trying to build something of my own.<\/p>\n

She remembers a father who was home, but often still at work.<\/p>\n

Both memories are true.<\/p>\n

Today, there is so much excitement about building a business at night with AI. I understand the appeal. A salary to support the family. A few hours after work to build a dream.<\/p>\n

I hope these tools also help us finish earlier.<\/p>\n

Because the little girl in this photograph now has a job and a life of her own. Those evenings were passing, even when I thought I was just taking one more call.<\/p>\n

If you built a business while your children were small, ask them what they remember.<\/p>\n

Their answer deserves a place in your founder story.<\/p>\n
